For all project management aspirants who are amazed and excited with the thought of getting PMP certified but at the same time fear (frankly speaking) from the time and dedication it requires, I have only one advice:
Don’t Quit and consider CAPM as a stepping stone for PMP
Similarly, if you hesitate with PRINCE2 Practitioner exam, do consider PRINCE2 Foundation as a stepping stone. There is nothing wrong in reaching your learning goal in step wise manner.
The below comparison chart gives quick and detailed differences between CAPM vs PRINCE2 Foundation in terms of the eligibility, cost, study time, examination and structure.
- In general, the USA and American countries prefer PMI-CAPM,
- UK, Australia and Europe prefer PRINCE2.
- Asia, Africa and the Middle East area have inclined more towards CAPM in the recent times.
Market Value: In terms of the market value, CAPM is a small step for the giant leap (PMP). It is desirable for all junior level project management professional as well as PMP aspiring experienced Professional. CAPM has been preferred choice for those doing MBA from top business schools and trying to build their base in project management. PRINCE2 Foundation on the other hand is similar in nature but has influence in UK and European region only.
Knowledge: It terms of the content and knowledge, both CAPM and PRINCE2 fulfill the purpose of effective project management equally. There is no clear winner as both tell almost the same story in two different ways.
Job and Salary Prospects: It depends on the professional experience. Junior project team members with 2-4 years of experience mostly gain higher salaries with CAPM certification whereas little experienced professionals (4-7 Years) showcase CAPM to negotiate a higher salary. More experienced professionals are expected to reach PMP or PRINCE2 Practitioner levels and do not gain any significant benefit. PRINCE2 Foundation and CAPM both open the gates of job prospects, however PRINCE2 Foundation has not shown a trend of great salary prospects.
